History of WWWomen.com

Like all good services, WWWomen.com began as a response to a specific need. The co-founders of WWWomen, Sue Levin and Kathleen McMahon, suddenly found themselves part of downsizing raging the corporate world as computer companies merged and were bought out in early to mid-1990's. As Executive Vice President of Marketing of a software reseller company and MBA, Sue knew she wanted a new direction in a more exciting part of the industry. As Director of Technical Support at the same company, Kathleen had already become involved in the early stages of the Internet's popularity by hosting an early website for crafts people.

So, in 1995, when Sue and Kathleen went to search online for what resources were available for women online, they were surprised to find that Yahoo! had not yet broken out a main category for women and other resources were difficult to impossible to find. They knew if they were interested in these types of resources and were having a hard time finding it, then other women must be experiencing the same frustration. They decided it would be a good business plan to build the largest collection of online resources of interest to women. It would be like Yahoo but just for women. They spent the next 3 months manually scouring the web for women-focused links and building a searchable database. WWWomen.com was launched February 1996.

As WWWomen.com was clearly becoming a popular destination for women to search on female-oriented resources online, Kathleen and Sue realized they could help increase the visibility of more women-oriented websites and launched BannerWomen.com in 1997. Female-oriented websites could join the network and earn free advertising for their own site on other women-oriented websites by hosting banners from other members. The exchange allowed a lot of surfers learn about women-oriented websites and BannerWomen is still the largest banner network exchange exclusively for female-oriented websites.

Because sites were so successful in attracting new traffic to their sites, some sites grew large enough to attract revenue-based advertising on their site. But they were not big enough or sophisticated enough to attract the large advertisers spending the money online to reach women. Again, meeting the needs of the female demographic, Sue and Kathleen launched HerAgency.com, an agency which represents female-oriented websites to large advertisers for revenue opportunities. HerAgency now represents over 80 million views per month, helping advertisers reach the right female-oriented target audience online.

Privately held, WWWomen, Inc. is an unusual anomaly in the Internet world - it has been profitable since its inception and remains quietly profitable today.
