Cindy:

Chapter Three---The Scenic Route

Traveling down I-70, non-stop talk. Tentative sizing up of familiar strangers. "Oh, turn here, this is it." "Where now?" "You're directional doo-bob says we're heading south. That's good. Let's go there." "Oh look, the stadium for the Missouri Tigers."

(Dead silence.)

"We're heading west now" "But the road curves back to the west up ahead. Let's just stay on this road."

Beautiful colors, three awe struck women who appreciate creation. Dogwoods blooming - both white and green. Redbud trees flowering. Lilacs blooming. Gently rolling hills with spring time green peeping out through the trees.

"Oh that was a lilac? I've never seen lilacs before. Never smelled them." "Where have you been, Pat?" "Stop, there's a lilac bush, Kate. Let her out." "Oh my, that was a wonderous scent." "Whaddya think those people were thinking of the crazy woman jumping out of the van to stick her nose in their bush?" " 'Martha, what are those women doing?' "

Beautiful tiny country churches with bright red doors, welcoming the weary souls.

Fascinating country cemetaries with old, OLD stones and monuments in them. Cool, grey, rainy day. Perfect atmosphere to get out and tramp around a little. Wet shoes. Big smiles.

Metal dinosaurs in the country house front yard. Overdone yard art. Leaving Cindy standing in the middle of the road, looking forlorn as Pat and Kate drive by waving.

Magnolia Manor. Pat is moving there soon.

"Oh, oh, look - the turn off to Augusta."

Instant gales of laughter. Heart pounding in anticipation.

"What a charming little town. Look at that house. How beautiful it is." "Kate, STOP! That's it."

We've arrived.

No more familiar strangers.

Next: Chapter 4 dinner on the town/where's Susan?
