The Virtual Woman: A Woman's
Whoever thought the idea of "having it all" for women faded with popularity of Milli Vanilli should spend some time reading The Virtual Woman's emails. Women today more than ever are having families and holding down full-time, demanding jobs. And the pressure to keep it all going is enormous. The questions I handle this week reflect and assist women with their work lives. Please keep these questions coming - I can be reached at the email at the end of this column!
Weekly Guide To Cyberspace
Dear Virtual Woman:
Okay, I give up. I've been in denial for years and now I’m finally going to face up to reality: I need to learn how to play golf if I'm ever going to ratchet myself up a notch in my corporate career. Do you have any suggestions for where I can go to get myself prepared for this new endeavor?
- Karen Anderson, Los Gatos, California
Dear Karen:
Do not fear, I've got some links for you (weblinks, that is). First off, you should check out The Executive Women's Golf Association. The EWG describes themselves as a, "Not-for-profit organization formed to promote and foster a spirit of acceptance, dignity and respect for career-oriented women golfers nationwide." Their website, located at http://www.ewgnatl.org/index.html describes the organization and lists all of the local chapters. I was actually surprised to see that there are a great deal of female focused links for golf as well. If you to the WWWomen.Com directory at http://wwwomen.com and plug in the keyword GOLF you will come up with close to 100 matches to peruse.
In terms of a more generic, comprehensive golf link, I consulted with a few of my golfing addicted friends. Of course they were more than obliged to help (anything to justify their habit and take time out from their day to surf the web). The one site that was on everyone's list of bookmarks was GolfWeb.Com (http://www.golfweb.com). This site is just about one of the most comprehensive ones out there on this sport. GolfWeb not only has all the golfing news you can eat but the site also contains just about anything any level golfer might be interested in - from golf chat, to rules of the game, to a bookstore, to a free newsletter delivered directly to your email each and every week.
After just a few hours on the links (both the virtual and the green ones) you should be heading toward a vice presidency in that company of your's! And hey, maybe along the way you’ll actually end up loving the game! Good luck!
Dear Virtual Woman:
I travel about 75% of the time. I’m always looking for automatic tellers and chronically pressed for time. Is there a guide online that can help?
- Here, There and Everywhere, Atlanta, Georgia
Dear HT&E:
These two sites should cover you: 1. The Visa ATM locator (http://www.visa.com/cgi-bin/vee/pd/atm/main.html) and 2. The MasterCard/Cirrus ATM Locator (http://www.mastercard.com/atm)
The Visa locator is especially nice in that you can plug in a street address and you get the nearest locations plus maps if you'd like (the MasterCard locator is somewhat hit or miss on the maps). Both sites have locations throughout the entire world so whether you're in Caracas, Venezuela or a half mile from home picking up your dry cleaning you'll get quick instructions to the nearest place to get cash.
Dear Virtual Woman:I am an electrical engineer and I've been battling with my boss about a raise. I am convinced that I am being underpaid and I would like to be able to reference some statistics about how much others in comparable positions are being paid. Anything online that you can recommend?
- Betty N. , Baton Rouge
Dear Betty N.:
The best place on the web for salary information can be found at JobSmart (http://www.jobsmart.org). The woman who developed the site is a librarian and it shows. There is a plethora of well organized information on exactly what you are looking for. The area you should head to is the Salary Information section (http://www.jobsmart.org/tools/salary/index.htm). From this page you can go directly to the Salary Survey section with over 200 salary surveys (and yes, there is more than one for electrical engineers).
Happy Surfing!
